The Last Ship delights in Edinburgh...

June 13, 2018

The Last Ship has continued its voyage having this week berthed in Edinburgh at the Festival Theatre. The reviews from Edinburgh continue to be extremely positive as they have been since the play opened in Newcastle. If you're quick you can still catch The Last Ship at the Festival Theatre as it runs until Saturday, 16 June before moving on to Glasgow's Theatre Royal.

The Herald in their Five Star review commented: "Campbell’s production, first seen at Northern Stage in Newcastle, is a huge affair. Sting’s songs move between the sweet sparring between Richard Fleeshman’s Gideon and Frances McNamee’s Meg, before evolving into powerful chorales accompanied by a five-piece folk band. If Meg is a latter-day Pirate Jenny, it is Katie Moore’s Ellen who represents the future in a passionate call to arms that offers solidarity and hope in the face of all that is currently wrong with the world."

The Southside Advertiser in their Five Star review commented: "“The Last Ship” has at times a very operatic feel to its musical structure, but there are also elements of classic musical theatre here mixed in with a working class theatrical drama. In this production, we have songs of hope, dreams, pride and hardship reflected in songs like "Island of Souls", "The Last Ship”, "When We Dance" and "The Night the Pugilist Learned How to Dance". If there is a stand out song to be chosen for me from this impressive musical set then it has to be the very powerful "Dead Man's Boots". "

The Edinburgh Evening News in their Four Star review commented: "Stomping, emotional and attractively unorthodox in its staging, this touring production of Sting’s Broadway musical is a powerful testament to the stoic dignity of the working-class men and women of our industrial past."

The Last Ship continues at the Festival Theatre until Saturday 16 June. Tickets are still available here.
